Ode to Fireflies

June 30, 2021

David Graeme Baker, Firefly, oil on linen mounted on panel, 23x32"

Like turning leaves in autumn, you never quite know when fireflies will show up, which only adds to the magic when they finally do. It is those moments, when the coast of Maine is cloaked in a spell of warm, humid weather, that provide the perfect conditions for their display. What can feel stifling during the day, allows for a celebration of twinkling light at dusk. Fueled by cool treats and armed with mason jars and the freedom of a skipped bedtime, children set off into backyards and meadows to capture the light and marvel at its beauty as they release stars back into the sky.
