Valise

Why does the dog growl

When I am only passing through

I will be here but a little while

I won’t be any trouble

And may I also ask you this, kind stranger

How many forlorn faces

And unfamiliar landscapes

Will I see before I sleep

For I am very tired

I would like to tell you a secret, friend

Come nearer

I have made myself a place

A tiny town

A small sanctuary

A haven, a harbor

A space to shelter

My wandering heart

I carry it always

This little place

And no place at all

I go there when the dog barks

And the old man leers

I have made a home of it

From my window I say to the passersby

I am here

And I am nowhere

Take me with you
