Bio

Peter Bogardus makes photogravures from black-and-white photographs taken in the field. Peter was awarded Guggenheim Fellow in photography in 2012. He received his MFA from the New York Academy of Art, studied large-format and documentary photography at the International Center of Photography, and studied photogravure with Lothar Osterberg and Jon Goodman. Peter is also known for his limited-edition hand printed books.

Peter uses a view camera with 4x5 Kodak Tri-x film. A copper photogravure plate is made with aquatint, then printed with hand-milled ink made from carbon, umber and other pigments on Japanese paper, in this case kumohadamashi. The paper is first prepared by printing from a wood block a ground of white powdered oyster shell pigment. The photogravures are mounted on a wooden panel made by a Japanese screen maker, Miya Shoji.
